BIS-CERTIFIED HELMETS TO BE ONLY USED BY TWO-WHEELER OWNER, GOVT ISSUES NOTIFICATION

As stated by government, on Friday, “Only Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)-certified helmets would be manufactured and sold in India for two-wheelers.

As per as the statement provided by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, “the development would help avoiding sale of low –quality two-wheeler helmets in the country. This, in turn, would help avoid fatal injuries in case of road accidents.”  Acknowledging the guidelines and direction of Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, a committed was devised to deem lighter helmets in India befitting the country’s meteorological conditions and thereby ensuring the wear of helmets for the safety measure by the citizen of the country. The committee had doyens from various fields, which includes doctors from AIIMS and from BIS. 

The total number of the two-wheelers being manufactured and mass-produced in India per annum stands at about 1.7cr. So after endorsement of the committee, which had done detailed analysis on 2018, the BIS, has revised specifications through which it is expected to make lighter helmets.

K. K Kapila, president emeritus of the International Road Federation said, “This much awaited move means the sale of non-BIS certified helmets will be an offence onc the notification comes to effect”.
