More coins boycotted as shopkeepers in Silchar make up new laws on their own

December 19, 2020: It has always been a struggle for the residents of Silchar and the neighbouring areas to make the shopkeepers, vendors and public transport drivers to accept the 10 rupee coin. From the early years of its existence in the market, this two-colored coin has always been a source of burden for its owner.

People wash their hands off as soon as they can, and the reason was that it was not very popular in the market. Now here lays the question of why would a government issue legitimate coin lose its value in a small town like Silchar? The answer might lie in the numerous baseless rumour that the 10 rupee coins are fake and banks will not accept them. But time and again, authorities have assured the public of its legitimacy and still the coin remains unpopular. But now, recently, shopkeepers and vendors of Silchar have made up their mind to not accept the other coins as well. According to them, their customers don’t accept them as change. On the other hand, according to the said customers, it is the shopkeepers who refuse to accept them as payments. As both the parties are blaming each other, the matter has been taken to the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, who has assured that all these coins are legitimate and are worth their minted value. Although no official complaint has been made regarding this issue but the public is immensely stressed as even beggars and newspaper sellers are also refusing to accept them. If this continues, the people would soon line up at the banks to convert their coins into notes which can affect the general daily affairs at the banks.
