According to the sources of “The Reader’s Time”, the district secretary of the CPI(M) of Thiruvananthapuram Anavoor Nagappan, officially declared 21-year-old Arya Rajendran as the youngest new Mayor of the City Corporation. Many media stories written so far within these two days were claiming that Arya will be the Mayor.
Confident Arya Rajendran, held back from commenting on presuppositions and decided to wait, as per several other reporters.
Earlier that day, Arya passed through the ward, where she won local body polls namely Mudavanmugal in Thiruvananthapuram. The place is famous as it once accommodated the well-known actor Mohanlal and his parents. Mohanlal too, like the other well-wishers, called and congratulated her.
People all across, including little children waited outside their houses and the party members stood on the streets of Kunjalamoodu to receive Arya on Saturday evening. During that session, one of the party members who was holding a red flag of the CPI(M) was interviewed and he said that Arya’s parents too have been a long time member of the party. Her father is an electrician by profession and her mother is an LIC agent.
On Saturday evening, a little after 5pm, Arya came with her father, the man who took her to party programmes holding her hands. Arya said that she have been going for party programmes with her father ever since she was a little child. She also says that the first memory of her going there was being involved with Balasangam- the children’s organization connected to the CPI(M).
“My family fully supported me and is extremely happy. I will not give up my studies. I will continue it. I also want to pursue my higher studies in Public Administration”, said Arya when asked about her graduation studies. Arya is currently seeking her Bachelor of Science degree with honors in Mathematics from the All Saints College, Thiruvananthapuram.
Voices of disapproval and criticism echoed all around, when a so young councilor was proposed as the Mayor of the largest corporation in Kerala. But Arya, without the collywobbles of a first timer, spoke of her plans for her ward Mudavanmugal, which she knew would matter for the rest of the city.
