COVID reports: India

The new COVID variant found in the UK had sparked worries across the world, since it is supposed to be much more infectious. Six people returned from the United Kingdom to India, have been found to be positive with the new UK corona virus variant genome, the government said on Tuesday, 29 December. Amid concerns over the variant, India had suspended all flights to and from the UK from 23 December. The suspension will be in force till 31 December.

At a press release the government stated “All these persons have been kept in single-room isolations in designated healthcare facilities by respective state governments. Their close contacts have also been put under quarantine. Comprehensive contact tracing has been initiated for co-travellers, family contacts and others. Genome sequencing on other specimens is going on.”

The samples of three of the UK returnees were tested and found positive for the new strain at NIMHANS, Bengaluru, two at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad, and one at the National Institute of Virology, Pune – asserted the Health Ministry.

India recorded 16,432 new cases of the corona virus infected (Covid-19) individuals, according to Union health ministry update on Tuesday morning. With this, the nationwide tally reached 10,224,303.The number of active cases dropped to 2, 68,581, according to health ministry’s update at 8 am, while 98, 07,569 patients were cured and discharged from hospitals. The country recorded 252 new fatalities due to the infection, which took the overall death toll to 1, 48,153.

The Centre on Monday maintained the Covid-19 protocols on various activities. As per the sources of “The Reader’s Time” in a statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) stated that it has issued fresh guidelines for surveillance with regard to Covid-19 that will remain in force till January 31, as it asked the states and union territories to keep a strict vigil to prevent any rise in cases during the New Year celebrations and the winter season. The government is carrying out vaccination dry run to prepare the infrastructure before the expected rollout of Covid-19 vaccine in January. The dry run will also help health authorities identify the shortcomings and sort out the issues before vaccines are administered to people.
