After UK PM Boris Johnson, informed Modi that he won’t be able to join the Republic Day Celebration due to the alerting Corona Virus situations in UK. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor suggested cancelling the Republic Day festivities altogether, saying getting crowds to cheer the parade as usual would be “irresponsible”.
“The prime minister spoke to Prime Minister Modi this morning, to express his regret that he will be unable to visit India later this month as planned,” a Downing Street spokesperson said on Tuesday. “In light of the national lockdown announced last night, and the speed at which the new coronavirus variant is spreading, the Prime Minister said that it was important for him to remain in the UK so he can focus on the domestic response to the virus,” Johnson told PM Modi.
In reaction to this Tharoor tweeted, “ Now that @Boris Johnson’s visit to India this month has been cancelled due to the COVID Second wave, & we don’t have a Chief Guest on Republic Day, why not go one step farther & cancel the festivities altogether?” on Tuesday night.
He said, “Getting crowds to cheer the parade as usual would be irresponsible”.
