As a precautionary measure, Assam Government declared a ban on all imported poultry goods from other states along its western border. However, sales of poultry will go on as usual as Assam houses a sufficient number of domestic poultry farms. Assam usually imports poultry from the neighboring eastern states of the country but due to the Avian Flu outbreak in some states, the government deemed it a necessary step.

As stated in a notification issued by the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department, the ban will be forced immediately and will remain so until further orders. However, director of State Veterinary department, Ashok Barman assured the public that “there’s no need to panic yet. There’s not been a single case of Avian flu infection recorded in the state so far” he said. “Poultry products are usually imported to the state from West Bengal, Bihar, Rajasthan, UP among others and we have decided to ban it temporarily as infected birds should not be allowed to come to Assam” he added.

The ban will not have that much of an impact on the domestic market and there will be no shortage of chicken due to the large scale local production and storage of broiler chickens, said an official. There’s no ban on domestic sales.

The central government has asked the states unaffected by the flue to keep an eye on any unusual mortality of the birds and take quick action if there are signs. The public will be immediately made aware if any case of this influenza is found in the state, said Barman. Furthermore, the government is said to have increased surveillance and strengthened security so as to stop any illegal shipment of poultry from outside. But according to our sources of The Readers Time, shopkeepers have been facing numerous questions from their customers regarding the flu. Some are even thinking of refraining from chicken consumption as a precaution.

So far the disease has been confirmed in six states, Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat and Haryana.
