Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) National President and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda began the ‘Vijay Sankalpa’ rally from Silchar’s Police Parade ground on Monday as Assam is likely to go into the next assembly polls in April-May. Addressing the crowd, Nadda asserted that the saffron party will return to power in the state after the upcoming elections bagging more than 100 seats of the total 126.
Stating the fact that since winning the 2016 Lok Sabha elections in 2016, BJP has won all other elections (zilla parishad, panchayat, territorial or autonomous council) back to back in Assam, Nadda assured the people of Barak Valley that their party will continue to protect Assam’s Culture, Language and Identity. “The task of protecting Assam’s culture, language and identity has been done well by the BJP governments at the Centre and the state and we will continue that. We have been sensitive about the rights of Assamese people”, he said. “The party has been working peacefully for the development of Assam, taking into consideration the interests of all communities,” he added emphasizing that the saffron party has fulfilled their demands without harming others.
Nadda also mentioned the various initiatives taken by the centre and the state government for the betterment of Assam and towards empowering the diverse communities. He spoke of the grant of ‘Scheduled Tribe’ (ST) status to six communities, smart fencing of border areas with Bangladesh and the signing of the third Bodo peace accord. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah resolved the 50-year-old Bodo issue by signing the peace accord and bringing the militants to the mainstream. All stakeholders were taken into confidence and the accord assured that their demands were given due recognition,” he stated.
Nadda even targeted Congress by saying that Assam didn’t do very well during the 15-year rule of Congress from 2001 to 2015. “During those 15 years, the state saw killings of 2,155 civilians and 284 security personnel and over 12,000 people were kidnapped. Over 51% area of the state was not covered by electrification and 56% of homes didn’t have toilets. All that has changed in the recent years” he said. Citing examples of the changes that the new rule has brought, Nadda further added “During 10 years of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in Centre, Assam received Rs50,000 crore in assistance. But since 2014 when National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by BJP came to power, the state has got Rs300,000 crore.”
Nadda was received at the Silchar Airport by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal upon arrival. Other dignitaries present at the rally were State BJP president Ranjit Kumar Das, Senior Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other party leaders like General Secretary (organisation) B.L. Santosh and State in-charge Baijayant Jay Panda. For his two-day visit, Nadda is scheduled for a party meeting in Guwahati along with a few other organizational meetings on Monday. He spent the night in the state capital and returned to Delhi after visiting the Kamakhya temple on Tuesday morning.
