On Sunday, Rahul Gandhi made two categorical promises to the people of poll-bound Assam: the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) would under no conditions be permitted and the tea garden workers would get daily minimum wage of Rs 365.
“I have worn this Gamucha with CAA written on it and over which we have put a cross. We have all worn it. This means, whatever happens, the CAA will not happen. Hum do, hamare do, acchi tarah se sun lo, (CAA) nahi hoga, kabhi nahi hoga, if Congress is voted back to power in Assam, CAA will not be implemented under any circumstance,” Rahul Gandhi declared.
Rahul Gandhi accused the ruling BJP and RSS of creating a rift between different communities living in Assam and weakening the state’s moral structure. Earlier last week, Home Minister Amit Shah said that as soon as the COVID-19 vaccination drive is over, the CAA will be introduced in the region.
“No power in the world can break Assam. Whoever will try to touch the Assam Accord or spread hatred, Congress party and the people of Assam will teach them a lesson together,” Rahul Gandhi stated.
With Congress seeking to express that the party represented Assam’s interests, the rally was heavy on symbolism. The leaders of the PCC presented Rahul Gandhi with traditional Ahom attire complete with a hengdang (traditional Ahom sword). They were playing O Mur Apunar Dex, the state anthem.
Particularly, the Assam Congress launched its ‘Axom Basaon Ahok’ (Come Lets Save Assam) movement across the state in order to remove the BJP from power. Elections for the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly are expected to take place between April and May of this year.
Sivasagar is a constituency dominated by Ahom, which plays a decisive role in state polls as the majority are tea garden community. On February 22, Modi will be visiting the state for the third time.
