Hima Das Appointed as DSP in Assam, says will continue her career as an Athlete | The Readers Time 

Star sprinter Hima Das, in the presence of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, was inducted as Deputy Superintendent of Assam Police on Friday and described the moment as a childhood dream come true.

“People here know and I am not going to say anything different. Since my school days, I harboured a wish to become a police officer one day and my mother also wished for that,” she expressed.

Sonowal, along with a former Union Sports Minister, handed the letter of appointment to Hima at a ceremony attended by senior officials from the state government as well as from the police department, including the director general of the police.

“I will diligently work for Assam police but I must say sport will never take a back seat,” Sonowal said her appointment will motive youths.

“A proud day for Assam. Glad to ceremonially appoint ace athlete @HimaDas8 as Dy SP in @assampolice. An honour for her achievements under the Sports Policy, the appointment will further motivate youths to pursue excellence in sports,” Sarbananda Sonowal tweeted.

The official Twitter handle of Assam Police posted a video of the ceremony at which Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, DGP, Assam Police, congratulated the star sprinter. 

“Welcome Aboard!  Heartiest Congratulations to @HimaDas8 and all 597 newly selected Sub Inspectors of Assam Police. Together, we’ll write a new saga of people friendly policing in the State, to serve the citizens of Assam,” the video caption read.

In addition to her work as the Deputy Superintendent, the Asian Games silver medallist and junior world champion said she would continue to strive for excellence in her sport.

“I got everything due to sports, I will try to work for betterment of sports in the state and try to make Assam one of the best performing states in the country, like Haryana,” she said.

She ran her first competitive race in more than a year on Thursday, winning gold in the women’s 200m with a time of 23.31 seconds at the Indian Grand Prix II.

In the 2018 Asian Games, she won silver in women’s 400m and was also part of the gold-winning women’s 400m relay in the quadrennial event in Jakarta and mixed 400m relay quartets.
