A Global refugee crisis is on its way. Refugees cried, “Twenty years, billion US dollars, hundreds of thousands of dead Afghan civilians and allied soldiers later, it feels like we are standing where the twenty-first century began.”
The Taliban took territory in the recent weeks, with that many Afghans had to flee from their homes on foot or in cars or rickshaws in hunt of shifting, shrinking government-controlled pockets. The Taliban has restricted access to the airport, where scenes of chaos continued into Friday, with only a trickle of Afghans managing to make their way out.
The largest share of the displacement crisis is on its way towards Afghanistan’s borders and also towards its neighbouring countries. There is a possibility of an enormous refugee crisis due to the Taliban’s comeback to the national power.
There is no excuse that Taliban or any other religious fundamentalist groups can use to justify the heinous crimes committed against humanity, anti-democratic and totalitarian characteristics, or rampant misogyny that forms a crucial part of their value system. Right now, we don’t know if we are winning against global terrorism like the NATO allies of the US, or the Taliban, who are mercilessly hurting civilians. But one thing is clear that the people are losing, just like always. The people have paid, and are still paying the cost of political agenda driven internal wars with their lives.
Looking at the circumstances, Kabul’s urban Shahr-e Naw Park has been transformed into a shelter for thousands of displaced Afghan people. It is disheartening to see people hang some clothes to block the sun as the temperature rises to nearly 90 degrees. Few took the shade of the trees. Many fled away, but some were left behind; lost their families too.
Hearing of several other stories from Afghanistan is tearing my heart into pieces. The massive loss of credibility of armies of political analysts and intelligence agencies worldwide is significant in the current global political context to ask for humanistic inquiry. Afghani people who are now kicked out to another descending spiral of history are all waking up every day with hopes, dreams, and ambitions and are struggling to be rich, not to buy expensive cars, not to build luxurious homes, but just to survive. There is a global humanitarian crisis unfolding itself, and in such situation, the world cannot afford to ignore the flight and plight of refugees.
