Assam News Latest | Major Collision between 2 ferries near Majuli in the middle of the Brahmaputra

Major chaos ensued on the Brahmaputra after two ferries collided mid stream on the Brahmaputra. The ferry collision near Majuli occurred while one of the ferries was travelling from Jorhat to the Majuli island. The craft has been reported to be carrying around 100 passengers and some cargo.

The ‘Ma Kamala’ river boat, travelling form Jorhat to the Majuli Island collided with another craft named the ‘Tripkai’ mid- stream. Tripkai was travelling from Majuli to Neematighat. The collision was intense enough that some vehicles being carried onboard also capsized due to the impact.

Overboard passengers scrambled to keep themselves from drowning. As the head count is still going on, the exact numbers for the number of dead and injured are not known. Although reports of some deaths can be partially verified while some are still presumed missing.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have immediately begun their rescue operations in the area.

Former Chief Minister of Assam, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal has also shared his concern by retweeting the above tweet by our Prime Minster, Shri Narendra Modi. He further added his own message through the following tweet.

Concrete figures of damages have not yet materialized. We will have to wait for the official response to find more credible information.
