NCERT textbooks are available digitally in the Indian Sign Language, for students with hearing disabilities

Good news for the students with hearing disabilities of primary classes!

A great movie was made for the accommodations and modifications for students with hearing impairments. Students, studying in classes 1 to 5 can now expect for more inclusive education. The students will be able to study the National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT) textbooks digitally in the Indian Sign Language.

Also for classes 6 to 8, the textbooks are expected to be converted to Indian Sign Language in the next one year time. These will also be available as a free resource by December of 2022.  These measures are in keeping with the National Education Policy 2020 which states that Indian Sign Language (ISL) must be standardized across the country, and national and state curriculum materials developed along with assistive technology for hearing impaired students.

Spread in over 490 modules, the textbooks for classes 1-5 are in digital format and are prepared by the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre. The National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT), has uploaded these on the Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing (Diksha) portal.

According to the government, the portal is being accessed by five crore students and teachers every day. This step will prove itself a revolutionary one for students with hearing disabilities. They are capable of molding the future of the country, and now with the digital learning in Indian Sign Language, they can march forward towards greater possibilities.

The materials of the textbooks will also be disseminated through PM e-Vidya DTH TV channels.
