Several NGOs and opposition political leaders came together to protest against the decision of Praaer Bharati to close the Silchar Doordarshan Kendra.
Rupam, a socio-cultural and sports organization, while criticizing the decision of the Government said that the Silchar Doordarshan Kendra was the only source through which the culture of the Southern Assam is presented to the rest of the country and if the recent order of the government is implemented then this region will lose the opportunity of presenting its culture to the country.
Rupam General Secretary Nikhil Paul urged the center and Prasar Bharati to reconsider the decision regarding the Silchar Kendra. Mr. Paul further said that Barrak Valley has a rich multilingual culture and the region also has a rich history of the language movement. Paul said that they will send a memorandum to the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to show their protest against Silchar Doordarshan Kendra closing decision.
Former MP of Cachar Sushmita Dev laid the blame on the sitting MP Rajdeep Roy for keeping silent on Silchar Doordarshan closing news. She said earlier attempts by the center in this direction were stalled by a massive protest by the people of Silchar.
