Motion on Kashmir Issue Failed in Labour Party Conference

Last week, MP Naz Shah, a Pakistan origin MP of Britain’s Labour Party made a failed attempt to get a Kashmir issue debated and voted on at the annual conference of the Labour party. The mentioned MP is also known for calling PM Modi a “butcher”. The motion put forward on Kashmir was successful to receive only 20,413 votes. Among the CLP members in the voting, no associated members voted in the fever of motion.

Dr. Neeraj Patil, chairman of Hindus for Labour, welcomed the outcome of the voting and said that this move will relationship between the Labour Social gathering and the British Hindu neighborhood.

The defeated motion has demanded condemning the Indian government’s decision of revocation of Article 370 and 35A the motion also urges Labour MPs and Labour party leader Starmer to get committed to ending human rights abuses in the Valley and to partake in “mediations between India, Pakistan and the Kashmiri people”. The defeated motion pointed out that while the Indian government had prevented journalists to visit the Valley and detained elected Kashmiri politicians, and not allowed MP’s of opposition political parties to visit Kashmir, it had considered a visit of European politicians who subscribe to far-right parties.

At the 2019 conference, the Labour party had unanimously adopted an emergency motion on Kashmir criticizing the Indian Government’s move on Kashmir as a response more than 70 British Indian organizations writing a collective letter to the then Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, saying that the motion could affect diplomatic relations between India and Britain.
