Union minister for, Sarbananda Sonowal resigned as a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly on Thursday, a day after being elected as a member of Rajya Sabha. Mr. Sonowal submitted his resignation letter to Speaker Biswajit Daimary. Sarbananda Sonowal got elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly as an MLA from Majuli. With the resignation of Mr. Sonowal, the count of BJP MLA in the Assam Legislative Assembly has come down to 59. The alliance of ruling Party AGP and UPPL have nine and five MLAs respectively.
Assam has a total of seven seats in the Rajya Sabha, with the BJP holding three seats while its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has one seat. Two of the remaining seats are held by Congress and an independent MP.
Sarbananda Sonowal’s current position is as the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Ayush. While speaking to reporters, Sonowal stated that he will continue to work for the development of the Assam and the people of Assam. He further thanked the BJP leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, national president JP Nadda, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Assam CM Himanta Sarma, for their support towards him. In his statement, he also said that “My special thanks to the people of Assam and especially Majuli for their unrelenting belief and trust in me,”
