‘Encroachers’ aim to alter power equation in Assam said Himanta Biswa Sarma, AIUDF counters

Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma on Thursday, aiming at the people whom he calls ‘encroachers’, said that they have implemented the blueprint to topple the power equation of the Assam by 2050 with the help of demographic means. Opposition interpreted the statement as a communal statement.

In Dhemaji while speaking to reporters Dr. Himanta Biswa stated that the “illegal settlers” claimed to be affected by disasters and migrate from one place to another with a particular agenda. CM in his statement said that “I’m not naming any particular community. We shouldn’t say it’s being done by followers of Islam as indigenous Assamese Muslims are not part of this. The collective aim of these people (encroachers) is to completely alter the power equation in Assam by 2050,”

This comment of Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma came in a time when a week ago two civilians were killed and 20 others were injured, including 11 policemen, during the violent protest against the eviction drive in Darrang district.

BJP lead Assam government has started evicting settlers who have allegedly encroached government land. Most of those eviction drives held at Sonitpur, Hojai, and Darrang were Bengali-speaking Muslims believed to be Bangladeshi illegal immigrants.

CM Sarma in his statement said that the “encroachers” claim that they are displaced from their place of origin due to some disaster, and migrated to another place, and settle illegally there as part of a plan. If it is inquired, it will be will found that many of these so-called displaced people are the owner of hundreds of ‘bighas’ of land. But they will remain silent if they are asked about this.

Replying to CM on this statement AIUDF organizing secretary Mohd Aminul Islam said “These are very communal and sensitive comments… It is unfortunate that the CM himself is spreading such conspiracy theories and hatred for Muslims,”
