 Assam eviction drive: Congress MLA Show-Caused for ‘provocative’ comment

Assam eviction drive: Sherman Ali Ahmed, an MLA of the Indian National Congress Party has been show-caused by his party. The reason for issuing show-cause was a provocative statement related to the eviction drive of the state government in the Darrang district.

Sherman Ali Ahmed was elected in the State Assembly from the Baghbar Assembly constituency. Congress Party accused Mr. Ahmed of being an agent of Bharatiya Janta Party. They further asked him to explain accusations that he has been put on him.

On September 30 Mr. Sherman Ali Ahmed, in his statement, justified the assassination of eight Assamese youths in the Garukhuti-Dhalpur area almost 40 years ago. The area was where police shot and killed two persons, one of them a minor, during the Assam eviction drive on September 23. Through this eviction drive, the government is willing to free 77,000 bighas in the area. These are areas supposedly occupied illegally by Bengali-speaking Muslims. The eviction drive has always been in controversy early Congress MP Abdul Khaleque slammed eviction drive in Assam.

Mr. Sherman Ali Ahmed was also questioned about his closeness with Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. The Congress party directed Mr. Ahmed to explain his reason behind the act. This is to be done within three days of receiving the show-cause notice.

On the other hand, BJP and its ally the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) hit back on the Congress MLA for being insensitive to the eight martyrs of the Assam agitation. AGP, which was formed by students who were leading that agitation of Assam from 1979-85, also protested by burning effigies of Mr. Ahmed across the State.
