On Saptami night, a devastating fire broke out on Hospital Road Silchar, the heart of the city. This took place at Ambicapatty Point on Hospital Road. The fire destroyed 6 houses including 8 shops. The amount of damage is estimated to be several crores of rupees. Police said the incident took place around 3 am that night. The house of Sayeda Khatun at Ambicapatty Point suddenly caught fire. Then everyone in the house was asleep. A driver passing by Hospital Road witnessed the incident first and called the police. Police immediately rushed to the spot. The fire engines came from Tarapur, Rangirkhari, Sonai, Udharband, Dhalai.
But before that, the flames of the fire engulfed the house of Sayeda Khatun. The houses of nearby Renu Khatun, Veena Begum Sheikh, and Raju Sheikh were burnt down. The fire also spread to the houses of Gopal Deb and Shankari Deb. Gopal’s house was completely burnt down and the house of Shankari was partially burnt. Besides, Kamal Paul’s bicycle shop, Vishnu Prasad Deb’s bicycle shop, Santosh Pal’s fabrication shop, Bishnu Prasad Paul’s hardware shop, Debabrata Dutt’s bicycle shop, and Sumitra Nandi Purkayastha’s hardware shop in front of the houses were completely burnt down.
The fire brigade brought the fire under control after trying for about 2hrs. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained but many claims that the explosion of the cylinder could have started the fire. However, a section is fearing a mystery behind the fire. However, the police investigation is continuing.
