NIT Silchar departments list 2022: National Institute of Technology was established in the year 1967. It was one of the 31 NITs of India. Previously it was a Regional Engineering College, which later in 2002 was upgraded to NIT Silchar. Later, it was declared as Institute Of National Importance under the National Institute Of Technology Act, 2007. It is located twelve kilometers away from the main city of Silchar in the state of Assam. In 2020, the institute ranked 46th by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
It is one of the top-ranked institutes in the region. The institute offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Engineering, Humanities, and Science with 11 departments. It also offers various post-graduation programs in Engineering, Management, and Science. 01. Civil Engineering
The journey of the department of Civil Engineering in NIT Silchar started in the year 1977. This engineering institute is dedicated to providing quality education to undergraduate students. Currently, the department also fosters five postgraduate courses as well. The department has around dozen laboratories with different research and examining facilities. The HOD of the Department of Civil Engineering is Dr. Parthajit Roy. The department has faculty which consists of specialists from the field. The department holds a commendable research ambiance to boost the student’s creativity.
02. Computer Science and Engineering
The journey of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering started in the year 1987. Previously, the institute was under the Department of Electrical Engineering. In the year 2000, it got separated. However, till 2008 the department was under the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering. Finally, in the year 2008, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering could emerge as an independent department. It offers B. Tech., M. Tech. and Ph. D. programs. The department is well equipped with all the ultra-modern facilities, that are needed for research. Blade Server (IBM 7 blades), Thermal Cameras, Workstations, latest configured Desktop PCs, etc. Furthermore, the department has procured dozens of software, namely, IBM Rational Rose, QUALNET, Red-hat Linux, Windows, Matlab, etc. the department has it all. Dr. Saroj Kumar Biswas is the HOD of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The facilities and the students work hand in hand to come up with a unique identity in the country.
03. Electrical Engineering
The electrical engineering department is considered as one of the finest and well-equipped departments in the northeast region. The highly qualified faculty is what they are very proud of. The strong faculty team is under the able headship of Dr. B. K. Roy. Courses in Power Systems, Control Systems, Electrical Machines, Instrumentation, Switchgear and IndustComputer Aided Power Systems, Flexible AC Transmission, etc. are offered by the department. Also, the final year students get a chance to make a choice from a wide array of electives in the form of Computer Aided Power Systems, Flexible AC Transmission, etc. There are various practical courses that are conducted in the state-of-the-art Lab facilities of the department like Machine Lab, Measurement Lab, Circuit Theory Lab and Microprocessor Lab, etc. Honestly, the department of Electrical Engineering is actually s dynamic and vibrant one. 04. Electronics and Communication Engineering
The department of Electronics and Communication offers a B.Tech degree in Electronics & communication Engineering covering modern communication and software technologies. The department is dedicated to providing the latest and upgraded knowledge related to the field to the students. It understands the demand and potential for new communication technologies. To add up, the department has many laboratories with different modern equipment to help students stay advanced and on track to match up with the rapidly changing technology. 05. Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering
The department of Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering was established in the year 2008. It came up with a four-year B.Tech program in Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering, and a Ph.D. in related research topics. The department believes in promoting innovative research. It houses art laboratories and young and dynamic facilities. The infrared of the department has all the required facilities to help students and researchers learn and innovate. There are various facilities available for interdisciplinary research activities in the broad domain of signal processing, biomedical engineering, instrumentation, sensors, embedded systems, robotics, control, and automation. Apart from giving theoretical and practical knowledge, the department also focuses on the holistic development of its students, let it be intellectually, emotionally, psychologically, and physically.
06. Mechanical Engineering
The department of Mechanical Engineering is the oldest and best department in the region. The department has workshops that have highly sophisticated machines presenting a unique and unparalleled quality. The department comes up with different research and development activities, which enable the students to mix with the modern industrial requirements. 07. Chemistry
From the year 1977-1978, the department of chemistry started to function as one of the departments in the institute. The department is dedicated to providing both basic and engineering-oriented chemistry theory and practical courses for all the B. Tech students. Also, the department has come up with Ph. D programs from the year 2005. Later in 2009, it also started M. Sc. in applied chemistry, proving it as one of the best departments in the institute. The department has well set up laboratories, with a good number of advanced and modern equipment. The department believes in improving itself and so are looking for more sophisticated equipment that can help in satisfying the requirements of postgraduates and research scholars of the department.
08. Humanities and Social Sciences
The HSS department has an orientation and experts from three sectors of Humanities and Social Sciences- English Language, Economics, and Management. The core motive of HSS in this institute is to germinate a humane touch to the technology and help the engineers develop themselves, not just technologically but socially as well. Thus, the department keeps on making various attempts to raise issues varying from the social responsibilities of engineers to culture, literature, management, economics, and ethics. 09. Management Studies
NIT Silchar departments proved again and again that they can not only produce bright-minded Engineers but also come up with future business leaders as well. The department of Management Studies in this institute was established on 21st August 2012. The department has a separate building, which has Smart classrooms, Computer Labs, Seminar Halls, a Library, and most importantly a well-experienced team of faculty. The department comes up with 100% placement. The department believes that it is not enough to ace academically but holistic excellence is also important in all spheres of professional life.
10. Physics
NIT Silchar Department of Physics has been actively engaged in conducting research in the areas of science and technology. It provides both basic and engineering-oriented physics theory and practical courses. Currently, M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs are also there in the department. The journey of the department of Mathematics was started with the foundation of the institute. The department is standing strong ever since it was established in providing quality technical education along with basic support to all engineering departments. It has well equipped CFD laboratory. The department holds major priority in emphasizing R & D activities both on the part of faculty members and students.
