Wasim Jaffer’s surprising choice for captain of CSK after MS Dhoni in 2023

The past few years have been marred with highs and lows for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). They have won the tournament and, on another occasion, come dead last in the league stages.

The most recent version of the IPL in 2022 saw one of the most tumultuous seasons for the franchise. Starting the season with superstar and the highest-paid player in the side, Ravindra Jadeja, as Captain of the side, CSK made a very poor start to the tournament, hugging close to the bottom of the table throughout the tournament.

However, the consistently poor performances led the team management to make changes to the side’s leadership midway through the tournament. CSK invited MS Dhoni, the former captain of the side, to lead the team once again. While fortunes shifted slightly after that, all was not good with the side even after that.

In fact, there appeared to have been a rift developing between the CSK management and the Rockstar, Jadeja. A little while after the season, talks of Jadeja looking to find a place outside the franchise were also heard on the grapevine. In fact, fans noticed that Jadeja had unfollowed from all the social media handles of the CSK franchise across all platforms. This further added furl to the fire.

However, now reports suggest that after intervention from MS Dhoni, Jadeja is likely to be retained as a player within CSK. However, a major reshuffle is afoot as Dhoni is likely to retire after the 2023 edition of the IPL. This has prompted another hunt for a likely captain, preferably younger one at that, who can lead the side in the years to come.

Among the many names that have been thrown into the hat, one unexpected name has been suggested by the former Indian opening batsman, Wasim Jaffer. He suggested the name of Rituraj Gaikwad who has been a part of the side for some time now. He is the captain of the Maharashtra team in the domestic circuit as well. Mentoring the youngster for a leadership role early could be in the cards. And if all goes well, we might see a new captain for the CSK who could possibly one day lead the Men in Blue a well.
