Around 122 prisoners of Karimganj District Jail sat for an indefinite hunger strike inside the jail compound. They headed with the strike to fulfil their demand to provide justice to them by allowing their bail on time.
The families of the prisoners spoke to the media and mentioned that several prisoners living in the jail were not sentenced to imprisonment against their charges. Their cases have remained unsolved for many years. Reportedly, the prisoners appeal for their bail as per law. However, the procedure is often delayed due to the slag in the justice system. Resulting in which the families of the prisoners having to face several problems. Many family members mentioned that they had to live begging as the earning member was in prison waiting for the verdict.
Besides, the families also questioned the lawmakers’ efficiency and asked to set the accused out on bail or sentence them accordingly. Sighting the situation, the convicted prisoners sat down for an indefinite hunger strike demanding the bail procedure be faster.
After the act of strike hyped the situation, several cases of people staying in jail without being sentenced came to light. While some cases are pending for 1 to 2 years, some people have been living in prison for four years and waiting for their punishment or release.
