Analysis of CCI’s large fine against Google and how this will impact cost of Android devices

A recent ruling by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has prompted Google to warn that Android phones in India will become more expensive. There is a possibility that in the future, consumers, equipment manufacturers, and app developers might face higher costs. In addition to driving up costs and posing security threats to users, Google stated that the new antitrust order might also harm the company’s Android platform. In India, 97% of smartphones run on Google, so the cost implications will be more extensive

According to two separate orders issued by CCI last year, Google was fined Rs 2,273 crore in total. Among its many significant digital market interventions into anticompetitive practices by Google in multiple markets within the android ecosystem, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) penalized the company with Rs 1,337.76 crore. Taking advantage of its monopoly through Play Store, Google was also fined Rs 936 crore by the CCI. Google has 3given a total of 30 days to submit the requested financial information and paperwork by the court.

Additionally, it requested the tech giant adjust pre-installing app restrictions for smartphone manufacturers when licensing the Android system. As an example, require its apps to be pre-installed is considered anticompetitive by some experts. However, the business claims that such deals are necessary to maintain Android’s open nature. A Supreme Court petition was filed by Google India, bringing the issue before the Indian courts.

Mukul Rohatgi, the lawyer for CCI, alleged that Google refused to pay during Monday’s court hearing. However, Google had once already paid a fine in the same case before the European court. A hearing will take place on Wednesday in the same case
