Northeast Frontier Railway GM announces that the Track electrification to Silchar shall end by 2023
The general manager of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), Ansul Gupta, said that the trains running on electric traction would enter Barak Valley of southern Assam before the end of 2023. He also mentioned that the track electrification work is proceeding at high speed, specifically in the hilly regions.
Ansul Gupta visited several routes and railway stations of Barak Valley to inspect the real-time progress of the electrification project. On Saturday, he was at Silchar and said that the track electrification would start in Silchar before the end of this year. He also added that the electric lines are already installed in the nearby hilly areas.
According to the sources, NFR sanctioned Rs 2,353 crore in the Union Budget 2018 for the electrification of the complete track length. The area that came under the track electrification were Badarpur-Silchar, Badarpur-Lumding, Badarpur-Sabroom, Badarpur-Karimganj Agartala-Karimganj-Mahishashan.
Reportedly, the work got delayed due to the sudden outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, its restrictions, and the lockdown.
On 22nd October 2021, the first passenger train on electric traction arrived at North East. It was the same time when the Delhi-Kamakhya (Brahmaputra) Mail Special reached the Kamakhya Railway Station in Guwahati.
