NIA Informs Supreme Court: Akhil Gogoi is the Main Perpetrator of Maoist Operations in Assam
According to recent news, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has accused MLA Akhil Gogoi of being a kingpin of Maoist activities in Assam and has opposed his bail plea.
Gogoi had filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the Gauhati High Court’s order which permitted an NIA court to head with the setting up of charges in one among the two cases that were filed against him related to the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) agitation in Assam.
During the hearing, the NIA’s charge sheet was presented, which claimed that Gogoi had planned and instigated widespread blockades in Assam by sending cadres to train in Maoist camps, which resulted in provoking the crowd to cause damage to public property. On the other hand, Gogoi’s counsel claimed a political vendetta against him, and he is being targeted for being a political leader and an elected representative.
The Supreme Court has extended Gogoi’s protection from arrest until March 3 and will hear the matter again on Friday. The NIA is investigating two cases against Gogoi related to the anti-CAA protests. The high court previously permitted the agency to examine the framing of charges in the special court against Gogoi and his three companions in connection with the protests and their suspected Maoist relationships.
