This Sunday, the audience was left in awe at the Ganga ballet performance by Hema Malini in Mumbai. The ballet is an ode to the river Ganga, and the freestyle dance performance by the evergreen star, which included a few aerial stunts as well, drew admiration from the attendees at the NCPA Grounds in Mumbai.
Her daughter Esha Deol, was among the first to shower the performance with accolades, posting on Twitter, “Watched my mum @dreamgirlhema perform Ganga on stage—remarkable performance, visually stunning, with a very strong message on our environment and river restoration. I must watch her next show. Love you, mamma….”
Hema has also performed this ballet in Nagpur and Pune, and this was her first time performing the same in Mumbai. On her performance, she had previously stated, “I have performed different types of ballet dances around the world, and they have been well received by the public. We represent our culture by enacting characters from our mythology, like Durga and Radha Krishna, in pure classical form. But we can’t put a very classical dance in this ballet on the River Ganga. So, you get to see a very free style of beautiful dances.”
She also mentioned the late Sushma Swaraj as the instigator of this performance, which was meant to spread awareness regarding the need to maintain the holy river’s cleanliness. She also recalled that Sushma Swaraj had wished for the ballet to be performed in Haridwar.
