Ajinkya Rahane has been unexpectedly recalled to India’s Test team for the World Test Championship final against Australia. He was pushed out of the side after a string of bad form in recent international matches, but given the opportunity, he would be looking to make his mark on the most crucial test match of this championship cycle.
The decision to recall Rahane was made after injuries ruled out Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, and Rajat Patidar. This hole in the middle order is expected to be filled by Rahane. Even though Rahane has not hit a century since the Boxing Day Test against Australia in December 2020, his recent achievements in domestic cricket and the ongoing IPL season have been notable.
In the most recent domestic season, Rahane hit three hundreds in the Duleep Trophy and Ranji Trophy, including a double century. He has been a star player for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL and is in excellent form, attracting the attention of the team’s selection and management.
Additionally, Shardul Thakur has been recalled to the team. In contrast, Kuldeep Yadav has been dropped since selecting four spinners for the Test would have been superfluous. With R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel already on the roster, the team management deemed it unnecessary to add a fourth spinner.
