Assamese Braille Dictionary “Hemkosh” Enters Guinness World Records as Largest-Selling Bilingual Braille Dictionary in South Asia

Assamese Braille dictionary “Hemkosh” has entered the Guinness Book of World Records as South Asia’s largest-selling bilingual Braille dictionary. The Braille version of the dictionary comprises over 10,000 pages spread across 15 volumes, making it a significant and comprehensive work.

“Hemkosh” was the first Assamese dictionary edited by Hemchandra Baruah in the late 19th century. However, it was only four years after his death that it was first published. The Braille edition of “Hemkosh” was first conceived by the grandson of Hemchandra Baruah, Jayanta Baruah. He published the Braille Dictionary as a means to further the “Hemkosh” tradition.

The launch event for the Braille edition of “Hemkosh” was held by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The event marked the introduction of the first full-language Braille dictionary after Oxford, a notable achievement.

Speaking at the event, Jayanta Baruah expressed his gratitude and said that the launch of the Braille edition was a tribute to his grandfather’s vision. He also highlighted the importance of Braille literacy and accessibility for visually-impaired individuals.

The Union Minister and the Chief Minister praised the efforts of Jayanta Baruah and emphasized the need to promote Braille literacy in the country. They also urged the public and private sectors to collaborate to make more Braille books available to the visually impaired.

The Braille edition of “Hemkosh” is a significant milestone in Braille literacy and language preservation. It is hoped that this achievement will inspire more initiatives to promote Braille literacy and accessibility in the country.
