Government Deploys Additional Security Forces in Churachandpur After Vehicles Set Ablaze During Protests
Protesters and security personnel engaged in violence on April 28 in Churachandpur, Manipur, over the government’s land survey and the demolition of churches in the region, sparking violence. The Hmar Students’ Association had called for a bandh, or strike, in protest against the government’s activities. Seven of its members were held by the Manipur police because they participated in the strike.
Protesters reportedly set fire to automobiles, creating widespread fear in the city. To prevent future conflicts between demonstrators and police forces, the government responded by suspending internet services and deploying extra security troops.
The town of Churachandpur is still tense, and people are still upset that Police Commando soldiers have not been withdrawn from the district headquarters despite an agreement signed between the Inspector General and the student body leader.
LM Khaute, the MLA for Churachandpur Assembly Constituency, has been accused of inviting Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh to visit the region, adding to the tense atmosphere. As a result, Khaute was transported to Imphal by the police for his protection.
The administration is encouraging all parties in Churachandpur to remain calm and engage in negotiation to settle the situation.
