By May 12, Mocha, a tropical cyclone with wind speeds potentially as high as 130 kmph, is projected to intensify into a severe storm over the Bay of Bengal. Initially, the depression was a low-pressure area with winds gusting to 65 kmph in the southeast of the Bay of Bengal and picking up to 45 to 55 kmph elsewhere.
On May 12, much rain is expected as the system moves north-northwesterly. Later, it is anticipated to move toward the shores of Bangladesh and Myanmar. Due to Mocha, several areas of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are expected to get heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, while the northeast of India may also experience severe rain during the weekend.
The storm is predicted to bring severe rains on Sunday to Assam, Manipur, and Nagaland in the northeast. The authorities have warned fishermen not to go out into the water, and communities have been urged to take safety precautions.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has sent several teams to the impacted areas in anticipation of the storm. They also keep a careful eye on the situation and stand by to help if needed.
