Aabhijeet Sharma, the president of Assam Public Works, has launched a defamation lawsuit against Ranjan Gogoi, the former chief justice of India, for allegedly making defamatory remarks about him in his autobiography “Justice for The Judge.” Gogoi’s words, according to Sharma, damaged his reputation and misled others.
After Sharma petitioned the Supreme Court to update the NRC 1951 in Assam, the action was brought for damages of Rs 1 crore. Updating the NRC began in Assam in 2015 while the writ case was pending. Sharma claimed that the NRC updating procedure in Assam in 2017 was fraudulently conducted under Prateek Hajela. Later, the Indian Comptroller and Auditor General determined that Sharma’s accusations were true.
Sharma’s reputation was further damaged by reportedly defamatory statements in Gogoi’s memoirs. Sharma filed a defamation lawsuit alleging that Gogoi’s remarks damaged and diminished his reputation among Assamese citizens.
Due to the involvement of two significant personalities in the Indian judicial system, the case has drawn attention.
