FIR Filed Against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for Controversial Remarks on Miya Community

As a result of his contentious statements regarding the state’s Miya population, an FIR has been filed against Assam’s chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma. The complaint was made at the Nagaon Sadar police station by the local group Asom Sankhayalaghu Sangram Parishad.

Assam’s chief minister was criticised for purportedly blaming Miya vegetable sellers for the skyrocketing pricing of vegetables in Guwahati, the state’s capital.

According to the Asom Sankhayalaghu Sangram Parishad, the Chief Minister’s remarks were discriminatory and incited enmity towards the mostly Muslim Miya community. They say that this type of divisive discourse affects communal cohesion and exacerbates conflicts inside the state.

The filing of the FIR has ignited an intense political discussion, with opposition parties seeking responsibility from the Chief Minister.

The Nagaon Sadar police have acknowledged the filing of the FIR and said that the case will be thoroughly investigated. In response to the charges, the office of the Chief Minister has not yet issued a statement.
