KHADC takes action against non-tribal roadside hawkers and shop owners in Iewduh market

Non-tribal roadside hawkers and shop owners in Iewduh (Bara Bazaar), Shillong, are facing eviction as they operate without trading licenses. In a surprise inspection of the market, TitosstarwellChyne, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), directed the enforcement wing to take action against those who do not comply with the trading license requirements.

Iewduh, one of the oldest and busiest markets in the city, is home to hundreds of roadside hawkers and shop owners. The market attracts customers from all over the region, making it a popular destination for traders and shoppers. However, many non-tribal traders have been operating without trading licenses, defying the laws and regulations of the council.

During the inspection, Chyne and other officials found non-tribal roadside hawkers without trading licenses operating in the market. They also discovered non-tribal traders who owned shops inside Iewduh but did not have trading licenses. The council has issued warnings to these traders, but many have continued to operate without the necessary licenses.

Local businessman, Paul Leong, attempted to prevent the personnel of the Enforcement Wing from checking the trading licenses of non-tribal traders. He argued that the traders had been operating in the market for years and had established a loyal customer base. However, the council remained firm in its stance that all traders must have the necessary licenses to operate in the market.

To promote the market’s growth, the council is constructing a wholesale vegetable market in Iewduh. The market, funded by the committee, is set to be inaugurated in May. The construction is progressing satisfactorily, and the council hopes it will boost the local economy.

As the council cracks down on non-compliant traders, it remains to be seen how this will impact the future of the Iewduh market.
