Cachar Police Seize 1800 Sacks of Burmese Supari Worth Rs 4 Crore, Arrest Ten in Crackdown
In a major crackdown against the illegal trade of supari, the Cachar police in Assam seized 1800 sacks of Burmese supari worth around Rs 4 crore from seven trucks in Digarkhal. The police have also arrested 10 people and impounded 10 trucks that were engaged in this activity.
According to the authorities, the vehicles originated in Mizoram, and the contraband was intended for distribution throughout the state, particularly to the Gutkha manufacturers in Assam. This is not the first time supari has been smuggled into the region. Cachar district police foiled a smuggling effort and confiscated 2,000 kg of Burmese Supari stashed inside an oil tanker in December of last year.
The police have intensified the crackdown on the illicit supari trade, and this most recent seizure is another major blow to the smugglers. The 10 individuals detained in connection with the confiscation are being questioned to gather additional information about the Supari smuggling network.
