The Naga-American Council (NAC) has been accumulating worldwide support for an independent Nagalim, stating that the Nagas have never been a part of the Indian Union by invasion or agreement. The NAC asserts that since August 14, 1947, the Indian government has imposed a forceful occupation on the Naga people.
The situation in Manipur has caused the NAC tremendous worry since hundreds have been killed, thousands have been displaced, and houses and churches have been severely damaged.
Critics have criticised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for failing to address the issue in Manipur and for standing mute during the burning of churches on May 3, 2023.
Grace Collins, president of the NAC, met with foreign dignitaries, activists, and the media to garner support for the right of the Nagas to self-determination and independence. The United Nations, the European Union, and the Human Rights and International Religious Freedom Department of the United States Department of State have expressed interest and support.
