Political Instability in Myanmar Causes Delay in Mizoram’s Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project

On Thursday, Union Minister of State for External Affairs, RK Ranjan Singh, announced that the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) had experienced delays due to the political instability in Myanmar. Singh reiterated that the Indian government places significant importance on bilateral cross-border and waterways projects with Bangladesh as part of the Act East policy.

Singh stated that the Kaladan project was a strategic plan by the Indian government to connect the country’s northeastern region with Indo-Pacific countries. However, due to the unpredictable atmosphere in Myanmar, the project’s progress has been hindered. He emphasized that the project’s success would help India establish a link with all Indo-Pacific countries and gain access to the Indian ocean.

Despite the delay in the Kaladan project, Singh stated that the Indian government has alternative plans and is exploring waterways toward Bangladesh. He made these statements during the G20 business meeting held at Mizoram University (MZU), which he attended on Thursday. Singh highlighted the potential of the Northeast region’s youth population, stating that their skills and proficiency in English could benefit the business community across various sectors. He also stated that the Northeast region has the potential to become an engine of growth and propel India toward becoming self-reliant (Atmanirbhar Bharat).
