CM Sharma meets Tai-Ahom and Matak representative on Sunday and discussed on there demand
Assam CM Himanta meets Tai-Ahom and Matak representatives on Sunday, September 26, 2021. During which, the CM discussed with representatives of Tai-Ahom and Matak communities on their demand for being accorded the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, confirmed an official statement. In the meeting, CM Himanta Bishwa Sharma asked Tai-Ahom leaders to hold talks with the All Assam Tribal Sangha (AATS) regarding their demand. AATS is the apex tribal body of the State.
The statement also confirmed that, on the demand for ST status by the Matak community, Sarma informed them that the State government has agreed in principle to recommend to the Centre its inclusion in the list of Scheduled Tribes.
Tai Ahom Development Council
The CM Sharma said Tai-Ahoms will be granted protected class status in tribal blocks and belts of the State and a Tai Language Teaching Centre would be set up by the State government with an aim of popularizing it. CM also said that ₹125 crores allotted to Tai Ahom Development Council would be released by November 30.
In the discussion with the Matak community, CM Sharna stated that the Sodou Asom Matak Sanmilan will be made the sole body for granting OBC certificates to its members. He also added that 25 crores allotted to the Matak Development Council will be released by November 30. CM also assured that government will provide land for the construction of a Matak Bhawan at Guwahati, which will preserve the monuments and historical sites of the community.
