On July 24, a horrifying triple murder happened in Golaghat district, Assam, when a 25-year-old man reportedly killed his wife and her parents. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the occurrence was a result of ‘love-jihad,’ a word used by right-wing activists to characterize the supposed plan by Muslim males to seduce Hindu women into religious conversion through marriage.
The accused, a mechanical engineer, had first presented himself with a Hindu name on Facebook, raising worries about the hiding of religious identification on social media to persuade women for marriage. Moreover, claims of drug participation arose, claiming the accused was a drug addict and participated in trafficking illegal drugs.
The woman had filed a complaint against her spouse before, leading to his incarceration. Sarma disclosed terrible allegations of abuse and forced impregnation under the influence of injectable medicines during her time with the accused.
Promising prompt action, the Chief Minister committed to submit a chargesheet within 15 days and establish a fast-track court with a special public prosecutor for the case.
