What are the disadvantages of onion oil?

Onion oil is an essential oil derived from onions. It contains several active compounds like disulfides, trisulfides, and polysulfides which give it its characteristic pungent smell. While onion oil does have some benefits, such as antimicrobial properties, it also has some notable disadvantages.

Irritation: One of the main issues with onion oil is that it can irritate the skin and eyes. Onion oil contains irritating sulfurous compounds that can cause redness, stinging, and inflammation when applied topically, especially in high concentrations. A 2015 study found that onion extract can disrupt skin barrier function and increase transepidermal water loss.

Compounds in onion oil that contribute to skin irritation:

CompoundRole
Propanethial S-oxideLachrymatory factor that irritates eyes
ThiosulfinatesSkin sensitizers and irritants
Sulfenic acidsReact with skin proteins causing irritation

Additionally, people who are sensitive or allergic to onions may experience exacerbated symptoms like contact dermatitis when using onion oil.

Odor: While some enjoy the pungent smell of onions, others find it unpleasant and overpowering. The odoriferous compounds in onion oil, especially the sulfides, disulfides, and trisulfides, can linger strongly in hair, skin, and even rooms long after use.

Compounds contributing to onion oil’s intense scent:

CompoundDescription
Dimethyl trisulfidePungent, onion-like aroma
Diallyl disulfideGarlic-like persistent odor
Allyl methyl trisulfidePowerful aromatic compound

The intense and lingering smell of the oil limits its suitability and appeal for many topical uses like skin and hair care. Proper dilution and caution is required if using onion oil in aromatherapy.

Safety Concerns: While essential oils can offer benefits, many sites caution against ingesting them. Consuming onion oil may irritate the mouth, esophagus, and stomach. Onion oil also has hypotensive effects, meaning it can lower blood pressure to dangerous levels if consumed in excess. Topically, it can irritate and damage sensitive tissues like eyes.

Possible safety issues with onion oil use:

Route of exposureEffect
IngestionGastrointenstinal irritation, hypotension
Eye contactTearing, stinging, inflammation
Skin contactIrritation, dermatitis in sensitive individuals

Parting tip

We have discussed everything regarding onion oil and have explained the immense benefits you can reap if you use it wisely. While onion oil might be a miracle oil for the hair and skin we would be doing you a great disservice if we don’t explain some pointers you need to keep in mind before using this oil.

  • Onion oil is a very pungent oil and if you are sensitive to smells then you can add some fragrant oils to mask this smell.
  • Apply only a moderate amount of onion oil. You should apply this oil based on your hair needs and damage. It is not one size fits all. You shouldn’t go overboard with this oil in your haste to expect results. That way you will end up damaging your hair.
  • It is recommended to do a patch test with this oil before using it. A patch test will indicate if you are allergic to the oil. Take the onion oil and rub it on a small section of your scalp or skin and leave it for 24-48 hours. If you are allergic you will find rashes or pink patches or some kind of indication. If not you are good to go.
  • If you have sensitive scalp and skin then make sure you don’t leave the onion oil on your scalp for more than 3-4 hours, and certainly not overnight. Wash it off with a mild shampoo within 3 hours of oiling your hair.

How Long Does Homemade Onion Oil Last?

Onion oil is a flavored oil made by infusing chopped onions in a base oil like olive or vegetable oil. It adds a lovely depth of flavor to dishes and is often used in marinades, dressings, pastas, and grilled vegetables. But how long does homemade onion oil actually last? Here’s a breakdown:

Shelf Life of Onions Whole onions generally last 1-2 months when stored in a cool, dark place. The key factors impacting shelf life are:

  • Storage temperature – onions last longer when stored at 32-50°F
  • Air circulation – onions stored in breathable containers or mesh bags tend to last longer
  • Humidity – a humid environment can speed up spoilage

Onion Type and Quality

The type of onion and its freshness when infused also impacts shelf life.

Onion TypeEstimated Shelf Life When Fresh
Yellow1-2 months
White2-3 months
Red3-4 months
ShallotsUp to 6 months

The fresher the onions used, the longer the infused oil will resist spoilage.

Shelf Life of Homemade Onion Oil

When stored properly in an airtight container in a cool, dark place the shelf life of homemade onion oil is:

  • Refrigerated: 2-3 months
  • Frozen: 6-8 months

Signs your infused onion oil has spoiled are a foul smell, bubbly appearance, or mold development. As with any homemade oil, proper storage is key for maximizing freshness. Make sure to use clean, dry glass jars or bottles.

The rich flavour and aroma of onions can be preserved for months when infused into oil. By understanding proper onion selection, infusion methods, and storage techniques you can enjoy homemade onion oil for up to 8 months.
