Compensation Announced for Victims of Ethnic Clashes in Manipur

The administration has made substantial efforts to handle the legacy of the horrific ethnic hostilities that have ravaged Manipur since May 3, 2023. In a collaborative effort, the state government and the Centre have offered a compensation of Rs 10 lakh apiece for the relatives of the victims, with both parties paying equally.

Moreover, the government has vowed to offer a government post to a member of the victims’ next of kin, acknowledging the need for lasting support beyond immediate relief.

The Union home minister, Amit Shah, recently evaluated the security situation in Manipur. During a meeting with top officials from the Manipur police, paramilitary forces, and the Indian Army in Imphal, he directed the security forces to take severe action against any acts that disrupt peace, emphasising the necessity of restoring normality.

Additionally, he met with a group of notable women leaders and underlined their essential role in Manipuri culture. This three-day visit by Amit Shah intends to analyse the situation in the turbulent state closely. While rare incidents have been recorded, the authorities have effectively suppressed any significant outbreaks of violence.
