Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ Expected to Make Landfall as Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm, Evacuations Underway
In a concerning development, Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ has rapidly intensified into an “extremely severe cyclonic storm” and is projected to make landfall between Kutch and Pakistan’s Karachi on Thursday afternoon. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange alert for Gujarat’s Saurashtra and Kutch coasts, urging residents to stay vigilant.
As a precautionary measure, authorities have successfully evacuated around 21,000 individuals from various coastal districts to temporary shelters in Gujarat. The evacuation process is underway, focusing on relocating people within a 10 km radius of the coast.

The impending cyclone is anticipated to strike near Jakhau port in Gujarat’s Kutch district as a ‘very severe cyclonic storm,’ unleashing powerful wind speeds of up to 150 kmph. Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, and Jamnagar districts are expected to bear the brunt of the cyclone’s impact.
To mitigate the potential consequences, the government has implemented several measures. They have established shelter homes with essential provisions, including rations and meals, and devised an action plan to handle medical and health emergencies.
Furthermore, labourers at coastal ports have been evacuated, ships have been securely anchored, and crew members relocated to safer areas.
