Sexual harassment in Gauhati University: PG Students’ Union writes to VC alleging Sexual Harassment by Assistant Professor
Sexual harassment in Gauhati University: The post Graduate Students’ Union of Gauhati University has demanded a comprehensive investigation into the alleged sexual harassment case against Dr. Amit Pandey, an Assistant Professor of the Hindi Department, Gauhati University.
The students’ union also submitted a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Gauhati University. Demanding for a special committee should be formed to investigate the matter in which student representatives should be included as well. Dr. Pandey should not be allowed to engage himself in any departmental activities or enter the department premises while the investigation is going on, and untill all the charges are cleared from him. If found guilty, strict actions should be taken by Gauhati University and terminate him immediately and there should be legal proceedings against him.
According to the report, the professor from Gauhati University has been carrying out his unprofessional behavior for a long time, until a girl was molested. She was taken by fear and was hidden, the teachers also confirmed the same. The professor has been suspended for inappropriate behavior, unwanted sexual text messages, and intimidation, along with some screenshots of conversations that came out, where he could be seen sending ungentlemanly and obscene pieces of information. The professor has been taken into custody on 29th September.
While speaking to the media, one of the Union members said, “The authority have to take strict action. And, as we all know Gauhati University is a prominent University in Assam, it is very shameful for us as the incident has happened here. The authority and the police have to take strict actions against him and it should never happen again here.”
