A proud moment for the northeastern state Assam. On Tuesday, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed that Gamosa got Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
Sonowal shared this delightful news through a Twit that said, “Assam’s Pride, Shining Bright! Due recognition of our heritage & cultural identity. Gamosa gets the GI tag, bringing joy to thousands of weavers of this special item that has become a global symbol of Assam. Congratulations to all.”
Gamosa is Assam’s traditionally woven handloom product. Assamese people weave it as a cultural identity. The state’s people offer it to show respect and honor. Its distinctive red border and floral motifs earned geographical indications (GI) recognition. The product will now get legal protection to prevent its improper use.
On October 16, 2017, the application for the GI tag was filed by the Institute of Handicraft Development of Golaghat district.
According to the journal The Geographical Indication Registry, “Gamosa is a traditional textile of Assam. It bears great significance for the people of Assam.
Gamosa is one of the unique identities of Assamese society. It is a symbol of Assamese culture. This handloom product has high esteem and wide usage in Assamese culture. Earlier, ‘ Gamosa’ was also known as ‘Phali’. Furthermore, as it was used to wipe the face, that is why it was also known as ‘Mukhosa’.” A geographical Indication (GI) is a tag or sign used on products that correspond to a specific geographical location or origin. The news of ‘Gamosa’ getting a GI Tag has spread a stream of happiness in the state.
