In a major crackdown against corruption in Assam, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption team of the Assam Police arrested two government employees on Wednesday (April 26) on charges of taking a bribe in Silchar.
The officials, identified as Shyama Pd. Purkayastha, Junior Engineer of O/O the Exe Engineer (Agriculture) Cachar Division and Niranjan Das, I/C Executive Engineer (Agriculture), Cachar Division, were allegedly involved in demanding money from a complainant, who then approached the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption.
The complainant informed the Vigilance Department, which launched an investigation and caught the officials red-handed. As a result, Purkayastha was caught accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000/- from the complainant in conspiracy with Niranjan Das, who was apprehended for demanding a bribe from the complainant for passing bills and awarding works in future.
The Vigilance department took to Twitter to share the news of the arrests and congratulated their team for their relentless drive against corruption.
The arrests of Purkayastha and Niranjan Das strongly convey that corruption will not be tolerated in Assam.
