Wrestlers in India have taken to the streets to demand justice and accountability for alleged sexual harassment by Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the chairman of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). Some of the prominent wrestlers among them are VineshPhogat, Bajrang Punia, and Sakshi Malik.
The wrestlers have been protesting and sleeping on the streets in order to call for an FIR against Singh, who has been accused of sexual harassment by multiple wrestlers. Despite their efforts, however, the WFI has yet to take action against the accused, leaving the wrestlers feeling ignored and frustrated.
In a recent interview, VineshPhogat questioned why India’s best cricketers and other sportsmen have not spoken out in favor of their fellow athletes. She suggested that their sponsorship agreements may be preventing them from doing so or that they may be afraid of the system.
Vinesh called on these athletes to put up a neutral message and call for justice for whichever party is in the right. She also reminded them that if they can’t support the wrestlers in their struggle, they shouldn’t come to congratulate them when they win medals for the country.
The sexual harassment charges have prompted a national dialogue about responsibility and transparency in sports organizations. The protesting wrestlers have sworn to continue their battle until justice is served and those responsible for their crimes are held accountable.
