Captaincy on the line for Babar Azam in the upcoming Pakistan vs South Africa Match at CWC 2013
The Pakistan cricket team is under a tremendous amount of pressure owing to their performance in the Cricket World Cup 2023 so far. With only 2 wins in the 5 matches that they have played so far and a disastrous loss to Afghanistan, Pakistan is highly unlikely to make it to the knock out stages of this tournament. The prospect of facing South Africa which is in red hot form at the moment cannot be a welcome one for the men in green.
However, the 1992 World Cup champions have a history of coming back into the foray out of nowhere. Even the 1992 win came after successive losses, after which the team won 5 matches on the trot to win the World CUP under their talismanic captain Imran Khan.
However, while the fans are nurturing hopes of a 1992-ish comeback, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made some remarkable statements. In a convoluted statement, the PCB urged fans to support the team, however, made it a point to mention that the Captain, Babar Azam, and the Head Coach, Inzamam ul Haq, were given full freedom to choose the team as they wanted.
“Looking ahead, the Board will make decisions in the best interest of Pakistan cricket based on the team’s performances in the World Cup,” the statement from the PCB read, already suggesting to the team management and the captain that heads are going to roll after the tournament. The captaincy will most likely be on the chopping block if Pakistan cannot make a remarkable recovery.
All this will likely add to the intrigue of the upcoming blockbuster fixture between South Africa and Pakistan, especially given that any looses from here on out will certainly mean an exit from the CWC for Pakistan.
