Recently, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) conducted a mock exercise at the state level to evaluate responders’ preparedness in flood-prone regions of Assam. The exercise was held in eight districts, including Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Nalbari, North Lakhimpur, Dhubri, Nagaon, Cachar, and Darrang, with around 1,000 participants from various departments and agencies.
Before the physical mock exercise, all important departments, stakeholders, and disaster managers were trained online on their roles and duties during various simulated flood emergencies. Several departments, including ASDMA, DDMA, NDRF, PWD, the Agriculture Department, UNICEF, the Indian Army, and the Indian Air Force, submitted various disaster management strategies to address rising issues during the state’s yearly floods.
The simulated exercise aimed to evaluate the preparation and capacity of the state’s responders to manage flood conditions. The stakeholders evaluated the reaction time, communication channels, coordination, and efficacy of the various departments’ emergency management strategies.
Assam has seen almost yearly flooding, and the state has been attempting to improve its disaster management policies to lessen the effects of flooding on its people and infrastructure. The exercise undertaken by the ASDMA and NDMA is a step toward accomplishing this objective and safeguarding the safety and well-being of the populace during emergencies.
