Extraordinary Strike in Silchar: Defiance and Unity in Protest Against Delimitation Draft
Silchar is currently witnessing an extraordinary strike as shop owners boldly refuse to open their establishments despite a strong police presence. The strike has been organized in response to the controversial delimitation draft proposed by the Election Commission of India. The draft suggests a reduction in the number of Legislative Assembly seats from 15 to 13, despite Barak Valley’s population surpassing four million.
Today, approximately 200 individuals, including Abhijit Paul, the District Cachar Congress President, have been detained by the police from various parts of the district. In a remarkable display of unity, the people of Silchar and other regions in Barak Valley wholeheartedly supported the strike by keeping all shops closed.
While schools, colleges, and government offices remained open, there was a noticeable decrease in attendance by students and visitors. To intensify the protest, Congress workers have initiated demonstrations in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office.
This strike signifies the citizens’ firm stand against the proposed delimitation draft, which they believe undermines their democratic representation. The steadfast resolve displayed by Silchar’s residents highlights their commitment to protecting their rights and ensuring their voices are heard.
