Karan Challenges ‘Chick Flick’ Label in Upcoming Comedy-Drama ‘Thank You for Coming’

The upcoming comedy-drama “Thank You For Coming,” directed by Karan Boolani, has a strong statement against sexism and the pejorative phrase “chick movie.” On October 6, you can see the movie that Rhea Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor produced and in which Bhumi Pednekar, Shehnaaz Gill, Dolly Singh, Kusha Kapila, and Shibani Bedi feature.

Karan’s protests against the endemic sexism in Hollywood are powerful. He vehemently asserts that movies shouldn’t be judged according to gender norms but rather on their own merits. Boolani said in an interview that the label “chick film” is insulting and unneeded.

The director said that Sonam Kapoor was a big reason why Indian audiences started to take romantic comedies seriously. Defying expectations and capturing viewers, films like “Aisha” and “Veere Di Wedding” demonstrate the power of female-centric stories.

It’s a double standard that Karan Boolani points out when he admits that “chick films” have been criticised for stereotyping women as being only interested in clothes, men, and love.

The excellent buzz surrounding “Thank You For Coming” at TIFF has increased excitement for its upcoming release in India.
