The Khasi Students’ Union East Jaintia Hills District unit has voiced concerns regarding the proposed railway line in Khliehriat, Meghalaya. Citing fears of an influx of outsiders and the potential violation of indigenous people’s rights, the union has firmly stood against the government’s plans.
The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma, revealed that a study on railway connectivity to Khliehriat had been conducted. However, the Khasi Students’ Union recently met with the Deputy Commissioner to express their concerns, submitting a letter of opposition to the project. They demand stringent laws to combat the significant influx of people from neighboring states and countries.
The union has urged the government to prioritize essential services, such as the construction of better roads and improvements in healthcare and education, before investing in railway development. It is noteworthy that the Khasi Students’ Union has been opposing railway projects since 1988, having previously succeeded in halting the Tetelia to Byrnihat railway project in 2016.
Calling upon local leaders and public representatives to join their cause, the union is hopeful that the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) representatives will unite in opposition. A letter of protest has been submitted, and they are scheduled to meet with the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of JHADC, urging him not to issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to the North East Frontier Railway (NFR).
