Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar has revealed that residents from Jaintia Hills have approached the government with a plea for railway connectivity. While clarifying that it’s not the government’s initiative, Dhar stated that they will carefully consider all viewpoints before making a decision.
The proposed railway project aims to foster development and welfare for the people in the region. To ensure the residents are well-informed about the potential benefits, efforts will be made to raise awareness.
However, some NGOs have expressed concerns about possible immigration issues resulting from the railway connectivity. Dhar reassured that the government has mechanisms in place to address such concerns.
Opposition from the Jaiñtia Students’ Union and Jaiñtia National Council stems from worries about inadequate measures to control immigration and protect tribal trade. The government will engage in a comprehensive evaluation before reaching a final decision on the matter.
